Watch Chris Pratt Audition With Dave Bautista for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (Exclusive)
As you may see, Chris Pratt is wearing some kind of makeshift Star-Lord wardrobe, almost like a kid who rifled through their parents' closet for the closest thing he could find to the right outfit. Meanwhile, Bautista is covered with some kind of gray make-up, though not full Drax prosthetics, mostly just to get a decent idea of how he would look on camera. Drax ended up being just a touch greener in the movie, but you still get a good vibe from him in this audition.
What’s interesting is that in this scene, from when Star-Lord convinces Drax not to kill Gamora (Zoe Saldana), they’re actually trying to speak quietly, as if the scene was originally written for the characters to try and keep a low profile so as not to catch the attention of the prison guards. But as we see in the final scene, the guards really don’t care at all what the prisoners do to each other.
That change in the scene really helps with the tone and execution in the final cut, because the weight of certain lines can be better felt when using a normal tone of voice, or even yelling in that particular scene, instead of being forced to whisper. Plus, the dialogue was tightened up quite a bit, though it might just seem that way because this is an audition and the actors are still memorizing lines at this point.
