The studio re-hiredCap 2helmersJoeandAnthony Russoto directCaptain America 3all the way back in January, and the pair are now hard at work on the story. Among their inspirations for the new film? Fan reactions toCaptain America: The Winter Soldier.
In a new interview, the directors talked about how the response toCaptain America: The Winter Soldiercould guide the direction ofCaptain America 3. Hit the jump to read their comments.
Well now that Kevin [Feige] said it that means we can talk about it, I guess. That’s great. We’re just in the formative stages of it right now. We just started breaking story with [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it. It’s crazy working on it before the movie even comes out because you want to see what people respond to in the movie. You want to get some inspiration from what people like about the film so you go, ‘Okay, this is what we gotta lean into in the next movie’ or ‘this is what we should move away from, this didn’t work so well.’ So we’re just in that phase of breaking story but waiting to see how people respond to the movie.
It seems wise of the Russos to hear out the fans ofCap 2; after all, they’ll be the ones shelling out for tickets toCap 3. On the other hand, though, let’s hope that influence doesn’t go too far. There’s listening to fans, and then there’s slavishly kowtowing to fan opinion. Nothing good will come of the latter. The Russos' firstCaptain Americamovie is, by all accounts, a success. We hope they’ll trust those same instincts to makeCap 3a hit as well.
