According toVariety, Singer has been meeting with actors for the past few weeks. But Isaac was an early favorite, and now he’s booked the role. Isaac joins returning cast membersMichael Fassbender,James McAvoy,Jennifer Lawrence, andNicholas Hoult.
Scripted bySimon Kinberg,X-Men: Apocalypsepromises to close out theFirst Classtrilogy with"mass destruction.“It’s set in the ’80s and is expected to feature younger versions of certain classic charactersincluding Cyclops and Jean Grey. Singer has said the film will “deal with the notion of ancient mutants” like Apocalypse, who were born thousands of years ago.
Isaac has been bouncing around Hollywood for several years, popping up in films likeRobin Hood,Sucker Punch,Drive, andThe Bourne Legacy. But it was his starring turn in the Coen Brothers’Inside Llewyn Davisthat really seemed to push him into the spotlight.
He’s poised to become even bigger next year withStar Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, though he has several indie projects due out as well including J.C. Chandor’sA Most Violent Yearand Alex Garland’sEx Machina. Additionally, he leads David Simon’s upcoming HBO miniseriesShow Me a Hero.
That Isaac would jump to a comic book movie franchise makes sense. Just about every other leading man in his peer group has done the same thing. The only surprising thing about it is that Fox beat Marvel to the punch. You’d think Star Wars parent Disney would have hustled to snap him up for one of its MCU Movies.
