M. Night Shyamalan Posts Concept Art From ‘After Earth’

The director ofUnbreakableandThe Sixth Senserecently tweeted two photos from the production offices of the film, which is about a family who crash lands on Earth 1000 years after humans have left the planet. The story centers on what happens when a heroic father (Will Smith) is captured, forcing his underachieving son (Jaden Smith) to save him. It alsoreportedly starsZoe KravitzandSophie Okonedoto round out the futuristic family.

Shyamalan also captioned both of these to explain. For the left image, he said:
This is Dean, an amazing illustrator. He’s illustrating an early scene from the film. (I’ve picked tantalizingly vague pictures haven’t I?)
And for the right:
These are paintings and photos I’ve collected over the year. They are up on the inspiration wall in the art department of After Earth.
So let’s see what that all means. In the Dean picture on the left, what we see on his screen is something directly from the film. Not something that we’ll see in the movie, shooting hasn’t begun yet, but the visual representation of what that will eventually be. Looks very etherial. Maybe a city, or a boat or a ship. There are also a ton of images on the walls surrounding him that are probably revealing.
The right picture is of things that are inspiring the film. I recognize an image from Kar Wai Wong’sIn The Mood For Loveon there, and a few other things that look vaguely familiar, but nothing is directly from the movie. What’s most tantalizing about this image are the cards above the images. “Humbolt.” “Raige Old Apartment.” “Kitai Struggling.” These are all scenes, places and characters in the movie. Can you read any others?
I’m really hoping this film is a return to form for Shyamalan. Hopefully, through his Twitter, we’ll see more as filming begins next month.
