Jonah Hill Says Making ‘MiB 23’ Is “Kind Of Impossible”
Of all the information that came out of the infamous Sony hack a couple years ago, one of the most intriguing and ridiculous things we found out was Sony was tossing around the possibility of crossing over the21 Jump Streetfranchise withMen in Black. After we let that thought simmer for a while, that actually sounded like a pretty brilliant idea. Since then, the film has been dubbedMiB 23and recruitedThe MuppetsdirectorJames Bobinto be at the helm. But apparently, the project is still far from a sure thing according toJonah Hill.
Find out the latestMiB 23update after the jump.
Jonah Hill has been making the publicity rounds for the forthcoming release ofWar Dogs(watch the most recent trailer here), andThe Toronto Sunasked about the status ofMiB 23, which would see he andChanning Tatumjoining the secret organization that defends the Earth from the scum of the universe. Sadly, Hill cast some doubt on whether or not the film will actually get made:
I had the idea. But I doubt that movie will get made. They’re trying to make all the deals, but it’s kind of impossible with all theMen in Blackstuff. TheJump Streetfilms were so fun to make and the whole joke of them was they were making fun of remakes and sequels and reboots and then now it’s become a giant sequel, reboot. It’s almost become what we were making fun of and it’s hard to maintain that joke when it’s so high stakes.
For me, it’s the raising of the stakes and the escalation of disbelief that adds to the comedy. There’s just something about seeing Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s characters joining the ranks of Men in Black that sounds hilarious. While it does seem risky with the film becoming the very kind of movie they poke fun at in the Jump Street franchise, they can still use that to their advantage for comedy.
After all the sequels to follow22 Jump Streetwere teased in the end credits of the sequel, taking the next one to an unexpected place like MiB headquarters seems like the smartest move. Plus, don’t forget that somehowMiB 23would allow all of those previous sequels toremain part of the Jump Street franchise canon. So please let the stars align so that this crossover can come together easily.
