‘Interstellar’ Cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema Will Shoot ‘Bond 24’
Normally we’d have a large measure of sympathy for anyone who had to take over a job following Roger Deakins. And since Deakins isn’t shooting the new Bond film, someone has to step into his shoes. But the person to take over the job shootingBond 24isHoyte van Hoytema, who did such a tremendous job withHer, and then shotInterstellarfor Christopher Nolan. Van Hoytema’s star really began to rise when he shotLet the Right One In, and that led to a string of films that includedTinker Tailor Soldier Spy(which was a reunion withLet the Right One Indirector Tomas Alfredson) andThe Fighter,Her, andInterstellar. The cinematographer’s work has become steadily more impressive, withHerdemonstrating a command of subtlety that worked perfectly for the film. When it comes to rising stars in cinematography, Van Hoytema is among the brightest.
(Fittingly, just as he’s replacing Deakins to work with Sam Mendes on Bond, his gigs on bothHerandInterstellarwere situations in which Van Hoytema stepped in for the director’s unavailable regular cinematographer.)
HitFixreports the hire, and also reports word that this Bond movie will shoot on film, rather than digital. WhileSkyfallshot digital, most of Van Hoytema’s work (outsideHer) was shot on film. We’ll wait to see if this detail is confirmed, but it will no doubt make some people very happy. I’m just excited to see what Van Hoytema does with Bond’s heightened action scenes.
As far as we know, Bond 24 begins in earnest on December 6, when the cast will assemble for a script read. That cast includesDaniel Craig,Ralph Fiennes,Naomie Harris,Ben WhishawandRory Kinnear. There’s still no official title forBond 24— expect a big press conference event later this fall to announce the name, at which time new cast members will be revealed and/or confirmed, too. The film is set for release on October 23 in the UK and November 6 in the US.
