‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’ Teaser Coming Soon, Original Movie’s Teaser Almost Got Scrapped

This week saw thedebut of the trailer forThe Belko Experiment, a bloody action thriller written and produced byGuardians of the GalaxydirectorJames Gunn. With the arrival of that trailer, James Gunn sat down for a quick interview about how crafting a trailer for a movie like the forthcomingGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2proved harder than trying to market the aforementioned film that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year.

Find out what James Gunn had to say about the difficulty in crafting theGuardians of the Galaxy 2teaser, when we might expect it, and why the teaser for the original movie almost got scrapped.

Speaking withTHR, Gunn had no doubt that there was a much higher degree of difficulty in creating theGuardians of the Galaxy 2teaser than the trailer forThe Belko Experimentif only for one single reason: the fans. Gunn explains:

Guardiansis the harder one. WithBelko, the premise is what people have to buy into. WithGuardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie’s about. And there’s a lot of mysteries inGuardians 2.

Gunn went on to add:

WithGuardians, it’s such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It’s like, ‘God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? … Those are always hard choices to make.

A briefGuardians of the Galaxy 2teaser arrived withDoctor Strangeback in November (though it was online at the end of October), but since that was branded as a “sneak peek” rather than an official teaser, fans will be happy to know the official teaser trailer has been completed and will be released sometime soon.

Attaching it toRogue Onemight not be a bad idea, especially sinceSpider-Man: Homecomingwill have a trailer attached to theStar Warsmovie as well, but we’re not sure if that’s when it will debut. Whenever the trailer arrives, Gunn says, “We’re not going to give away very much.”

In addition, Gunn also had some difficulty crafting the first teaser trailer for the originalGuardians of the Galaxy. The original teaser, which prominently featured the signature song “Hooked on a Feeling,” just like the sequel sneak peek, was almost scrapped in favor of another teaser. Gunn explains:

That trailer tested not very well. We had another trailer that was very cheesy that sold the movie as something different than what it was — that tested a little better. And at the end of the day, the [marketing] guys were like, ‘This is what the movie is. We are selling what the movie is. Not something else, you’ve got to sell the movie for what it is,’ and that’s what they did. They really bought my trust with that on the first movie.

I wouldn’t mind seeing what that alternate teaser trailer looks like, especially knowing what we know now about the style ofGuardians of the Galaxy. It’s good to hear that Marvel and Disney were on board with how the movie was being sold so fans didn’t feel deceived when they finally saw it in theaters back in 2014.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2hits theaters onMay 5, 2017.
