‘Ghostbusters’ Animated Movie Finds A Director Whose Work You Saw During Super Bowl 50
Some fans are stillreeling from the debutof last week’sGhostbusterstrailer, and star Leslie Jones has alreadyresponded to some backlashabout the portrayal of her character in the first footage from Paul Feig’s reboot of the classic franchise. But that’s not stopping Sony Pictures from moving full speed ahead with more Ghostbusters entertainment.
The studio has just locked down a director to be at the helm of the developingGhostbustersanimated movieset up at their own Sony Pictures Animation, and while he’s not a household name in feature film animation, you undoubtedly saw his work during Super Bowl 50 and countless other times.
THRreports Sony Pictures Animation has hiredFletcher Moulesto direct theGhostbustersanimated movie. Moules is the man behind the ongoing series ofClash of Clanscommercials, including this Super Bowl ad featuring Liam Neeson:
As well as this Clash of Clans spot featuring Christoph Waltz and James Corden:
These commercials annoy me to no end, mostly because I don’t care at all about this game. But at the same time, the animation style is pretty cool, and Moules does seem to have a knack for directing cool action in an animated world. That’s exactly the kind of filmmaker that the animatedGhostbustersmovie needs.
Other work from Moules also includes some involvement in the creature department forStar Wars: Attack of the Clones, so that’s pretty cool. Plus, if you’ve been to an AMC Theatres location, Moules directed that pre-movie bumper with the little round helicoptersdropping off a Coca-Colainto a cuphholder landing dock. You can see a bunch more of his previous work atFletcher Moules' own website right here.
Ghostbustersco-creator and directorIvan Reitmanwill act as producer on the movie, but there’s still no script for this one just yet. And since this is an animated movie, we’re bound to be waiting awhile before we see this one in theaters.
This is all part of Sony Pictures big investment inGhostbustersthat also includes the founding of Ghost Corps, a production banner that has Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd developing movies that all take place within a newGhostbusterscinematic universe. There’s already been talk of anotherGhostbustersmoviewith Anthony & Joe Russo at the helmand Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt as the leads, and if this summer’s reboot is successful, you may expect a sequel probably.
Frankly, I think theGhostbustersanimated movie has the potential for a lot of fun, but will it tread the same ground as the original movie and the reboot? It would really need to do something different in order to stand out, but we don’t know any of the story details yet, so we’ll just have to be patient for now.
