Expect ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ To Be Bigger & Darker, But No Romance For Finn And Rey
Star Wars: Episode VIIIis in production right now on the other side of the world, and while set photos have leaked here and there, showing off some of the new locations and the return of ships like the Millennium Falcon and some X-Wings, any significant details are still firmly under wraps.
ButJohn Boyega, who played the new character Finn inStar Wars: The Force Awakens, recently took a break from filming to stop by the Cannes Film Festival (he received the Chopard Trophy along withDiary of a Teenage Girlstar Bel Powley), and he ended up chatting briefly aboutEpisode VIII, including what we can expect from the sequel, and one thing that we probably shouldn’t count on in the romance department.

For anyone hoping for anEmpire Strikes Back-quality sequel toThe Force Awakens,it sounds like that might be what we get. Boyega toldVarietythat working withRian Johnsonhas mixed things up a bit, sayingEpisode VIIIis “a different take, darker, bigger.” The actor acknowledges that the first installment of this trilogy was already sizable. “Someone will say: ‘How do you get bigger thanForce Awakens? But it’s crazy.” Here’s hoping that doesn’t mean we’ll see a space station bigger than Starkiller Base this time.
More specifically, Boyega was asked about the developing romance between Finn and Rey. But this half of the duo doesn’t really see anything like that between the characters:
I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Daisy and I, we’re friends. Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.
Honestly, I was surprised that the interviewer even referred to Finn and Rey’s dynamic as a romance. One could interpret certain moments inThe Force Awakensas romantic, such as their embrace after being reunited on Starkiller Base or Rey’s kiss on Finn’s forehead at the end of the movie. But I’ve never really felt like they were moving towards a real romance. There’s probably more of a romance between Finn and Poe Dameron, which is something theinternet desperately wants to happen.
In my opinion, Finn and Rey shouldn’t have a romance, if only because it would be a nice change of pace for the female and male leads of a franchise to not have any love blossom between them. Plus, there’s the crazier option of a Rey and Kylo Ren romance out there, which would be infinitely more interesting than a couple of good guys hooking up.
Anyway, hopefully we’ll get some more details onStar Wars: Episode VIIIsoon. With the movie coming onDecember 15th, 2017, we’re going to be waiting awhile, but having a title soon would be nice.
