Check Out This Helpful Guide To All Of Disney’s Sequels, Remakes And Spin-Offs
If you’ve been paying attention to movie news over the past year, then you’re probably aware that Disney has been digging around in their vault for inspiration by giving some of their animated classics the live-action treatment with revisionist takes on the same story, or spin-offs following other characters from the movie.
Just this year alone we’ve gotten word ofTim Burton directingDumbo, Alex Ross PerrywritingWinnie the Pooh, and Reese Witherspoonstarring in aTinkerbellmovie, not to mention live-action takes onMulan,Pinocchio,Prince Charmingand now anAladdinprequel calledGenies.
It’s a lot to keep track of, but thankfully, a helpful new chart has surfaced online to help Disney fans keep track of all the sequels, spin-offs and remakes from the past and the future, and there’s even some interesting information to be gleaned from the chart as well. As helpful as this chart is, it’s also a little frustrating, mostly because we can see just how much effort Disney is putting into remaking their classic titles for a new audience when they should really be putting more effort into original ideas to create new classics. It’s certainly harder to do than recycling old properties, but that’s how those original stories became classics to begin with.
Cartoon Brewalso notes how sparsely touched the classic library was whenMichael Eisnerwas at Disney. The only sequels that were made based on Disney’s animated favorites wereFantasia 2000, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s AdventureandReturn to Never Land,and two of those were direct-to-video sequels.
But the recent shift can’t entirely be blamed on CEOBob Iger’s penchant for rehashing old stories, because the shift to live-action remakes and spin-offs actually coincides with the collapse of the home video market, making direct-to-video sequels not as lucrative as they once were for the studio. The last of those films wasThe Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginningin 2008.
Despite Disney’s efforts to revamp their classics, there’s some properties that remain untouched (though who knows how long that will last). As of now,The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Great Mouse Detective, The Sword in the StoneandOliver and Companyhaven’t had any sequels, remakes or spin-offs head into development. (Disneyhas a newRobin Hoodprojectin the works, but it’s not tied to their classic animated adaptation.) And despite the fact that adaptations of fantasy novels are still going pretty strong, there’s no newBlack Cauldronfilm in the wings.
Don’t forget, there’s also remakes of some of Disney’s other films too,such asPete’s Dragon. So we might also see an influx of remakes of the studio’s live-action library as well, especially ones with hybrid animation.
