Bob Gale On ‘Back To The Future’ Musical: “Don’t Believe Everything You Read”
Well, we did warn you that the project was still in the very early stages — but it now seems like thatBack to the Futurestage show may be even farther away than we’d thought.
Yesterday,news brokethat directorRobert Zemeckis, his co-writer/producerBob Gale, and the film’s composerAlan Silvestriwere in early talks to bring Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and their iconic DeLorean to Broadway, and Zemeckis' rep evenconfirmedthat the three were “in preliminary creative discussions.” However, Gale is now cautioning that the story should be taken with a giant grain of salt. It’s not quite clear whether Gale is saying that the talks haven’t taken place at all, or just that they aren’t as advanced as people seem to think (i.e., perhaps the “discussions” were actually nothing more than idle chatter). Gale hasn’t denied the possibility outright, so optimists can continue to hold out hope that it’ll happen eventually. But in any case, it seems highly unlikely that the time-traveling comedy classic will hit the Great White Way anytime soon.
I can’t say I’m too broken up about Gale’s news. As much as I would’ve enjoyed seeing Marty accidentally woo his own mother via showtunes, honestly, the original and its two sequels are enough for me. And it’s not as if there aren’t plenty ofBack to the Future-themed entertainments out there already.
